Dubai is putting more attention on what happens inside the boardroom. This focus comes as family-owned companies prepare for growth, succession and increasingly complex governance demands.
The Dubai Centre for Family Businesses, operating under Dubai Chambers, has launched The World of Directorship – Certificate in Board Directorship. This is a professional development programme designed to strengthen board leadership and governance capabilities among family businesses in the emirate.
The programme is being delivered in partnership with the GCC Board Directors Institute (GCC BDI) and initially brings together 27 participants. Its emphasis is practical. It covers the responsibilities directors face when dealing with strategy, risk, finance, governance and long-term business continuity.
Four Modules Focus on the Real Work of a Company Board
The programme is structured around four interactive modules. These cover Corporate Governance Essentials, The Effective Director, The Effective Board, and Board Finance, Accounting, and Corporate Reporting. Participants will also complete an assessment at the end of the training.
The scope goes well beyond general leadership theory. Participants will examine directors’ legal responsibilities, board structures, corporate strategy, financial oversight, risk, ethics and reporting. For family-owned companies, those areas often become more important as a business grows beyond founder-led management. In addition, they matter as the business moves toward a more formal governance structure.
Certified Director Status Adds a Professional Benchmark
Participants who complete all four modules and pass the required assessment will receive the Certified Director professional designation from GCC BDI.
That qualification gives the programme a more formal professional benchmark. It is based on GCC BDI’s Framework for Board Effectiveness. This framework provides a structured approach to evaluating how directors and boards operate.
For family businesses, that kind of framework can be especially useful during periods of transition. A company may still remain family-owned while adding professional executives, new shareholders, external investors or younger family members preparing for leadership roles. Furthermore, the board becomes one of the places where those interests have to meet.
Dubai Chambers Links Governance With Long-Term Business Continuity
Dubai Chambers President and CEO Mohammad Ali Rashed Lootah said effective governance and forward-looking board leadership are important to the sustainability of family businesses. He noted their ability to respond to economic and operational change is also affected.
He said the Dubai Centre for Family Businesses is working to develop the management and leadership capabilities of family business leaders. In addition, the centre encourages stronger governance practices.
The broader objective is continuity. Better board structures can help companies make clearer decisions, manage succession more carefully and avoid relying entirely on informal family arrangements. This is increasingly important as the organisation becomes larger and more complex.
GCC BDI Brings Regional Boardroom Experience
GCC BDI CEO John Gollifer said effective boards play an important role in supporting the long-term growth, resilience and sustainability of family businesses.
Through the partnership with the Dubai Centre for Family Businesses, GCC BDI is providing current and prospective directors with training built around the practical responsibilities of board membership.
The programme is intended to help participants understand not only how a board should be structured, but also how directors are expected to contribute individually. That includes challenging management constructively, reviewing financial performance, understanding risk and making decisions with the longer-term interests of the business in mind.
Family Business Governance Is Becoming More Formal in Dubai
The Dubai Centre for Family Businesses was established under Dubai Chambers in 2023 as part of a wider effort to support the growth, sustainability and continuity of family-owned enterprises in Dubai.
Its work includes education, advisory services, governance support, certifications and programmes aimed at helping family businesses manage generational transition.
That work reflects a wider shift in the sector. Many family companies are becoming larger, more international and more professionally managed. As that happens, governance structures that may have worked for a smaller founder-led company can start to show their limits.
Succession Is Not Only About Choosing the Next Leader
Family business succession is often discussed as a question of who will eventually take control of a company. The board, however, can be just as important as the chief executive or managing director.
A well-structured board can provide continuity while ownership passes between generations. It can also introduce independent oversight, create clearer lines between family ownership and daily management, and help resolve difficult strategic decisions before they become internal disputes.
The new Board Directorship Certificate addresses that part of succession more directly. Instead of concentrating only on future executives, it is preparing people for the responsibilities that come with governance itself.
Dubai Is Building a Broader Family Business Support System
The certificate sits within a wider programme of support being developed by the Dubai Centre for Family Businesses.
Dubai has been placing greater emphasis on helping family-owned companies establish stronger governance frameworks, prepare for leadership transitions and preserve businesses across generations. The centre works with both public and private sector stakeholders as part of that effort.
For Dubai’s family business community, the new programme adds another layer to that support system. It recognises that preserving a business is not simply about keeping ownership within the family. The people sitting around the boardroom table also need the knowledge to govern it properly.
