Dubai is strengthening its position as a gateway between European businesses and the wider Middle East, with IFZA and the German Emirati Joint Council for Industry and Commerce (AHK) formalising a new partnership aimed at expanding commercial ties between the UAE and Germany.
The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen business cooperation, encourage knowledge exchange and create more opportunities for companies operating between the two markets.
The agreement was signed by Jochen Knecht, CEO of IFZA, and Dr. Martin Henkelmann, CEO of AHK, during the AHK Directors’ Roundtable held at IFZA’s Novecento in Dubai.
IFZA and AHK Create a New Platform for Cross-Border Business
The partnership gives IFZA and AHK a formal framework for developing initiatives that can bring German, Emirati and international companies closer together. The organisations plan to cooperate on joint events, strategic initiatives and programmes that support business development, market access and knowledge sharing. For companies looking at expansion between Germany and the UAE, that kind of network can be just as important as the formal process of establishing a business.
The agreement builds on an existing relationship between IFZA and AHK. The two organisations have already collaborated on more than 20 initiatives, giving the new MoU a foundation of previous business engagement rather than starting from a blank slate.
German Companies See the UAE as a Regional Business Gateway
Germany’s relationship with the UAE has expanded beyond traditional trade, with companies increasingly looking at the country as a base for accessing markets across the Gulf and wider Middle East. Dubai’s international connectivity, business infrastructure and concentration of multinational companies make it an attractive location for German firms exploring regional growth.
AHK CEO Dr. Martin Henkelmann highlighted the UAE’s strategic position and economic opportunities, noting the established presence of German companies in the country. AHK’s role includes connecting businesses, supporting market entry and helping companies develop commercial relationships.
Existing Cooperation Gives the MoU More Weight
The new agreement follows a series of activities already carried out by IFZA and AHK. More than 20 joint initiatives have brought businesses and stakeholders together, covering areas relevant to companies operating between Germany and the UAE.
That previous cooperation gives the latest agreement a practical angle. Rather than simply announcing a new relationship, IFZA and AHK are looking to build a more structured channel for future events, partnerships and business opportunities. The goal is to turn existing connections into longer-term commercial activity.
UAE-Germany Economic Relations Continue to Gain Momentum
The IFZA-AHK agreement comes as economic relations between Germany and the UAE continue to develop. Business leaders and government representatives have been examining opportunities across investment, technology, infrastructure and other sectors as both countries look to deepen their economic relationship.
The AHK Directors’ Roundtable provided a platform for those discussions, bringing together business leaders, policymakers and industry representatives. German and UAE stakeholders also continue to explore investment opportunities in both directions, with the relationship increasingly extending beyond conventional bilateral trade.
Recent high-level engagement has added to that momentum. During the UAE President’s state visit to Germany, around 30 business agreements and memoranda worth more than $10 billion were reported, highlighting the scale of commercial interest between the two economies.
Dubai Free Zones Offer German Businesses a Route Into the Region
For IFZA, the partnership also connects directly with the role Dubai’s free zones play in attracting international businesses. Companies entering the UAE often need more than a company registration. They also need access to professional services, business networks, potential partners and a market environment that can support regional expansion.
IFZA positions its free zone as a platform for international entrepreneurs and companies establishing operations in the UAE. German businesses can use Dubai as a regional base while maintaining connections with European markets and exploring opportunities across the Gulf.
That combination of international connectivity and free zone infrastructure remains one of Dubai’s strongest selling points for foreign companies.
AI Becomes Part of the UAE-Germany Business Conversation
Artificial intelligence was also among the topics discussed around the AHK Directors’ Roundtable, reflecting how quickly AI has become part of the economic agenda across the GCC. Businesses are now looking beyond experimentation and focusing more heavily on how AI can be implemented, measured and integrated into everyday operations.
The UAE has positioned itself as a major technology and AI hub, while Germany brings significant expertise in engineering, manufacturing, industrial technology and enterprise solutions. Those complementary strengths could create opportunities for companies working across AI, automation, industrial technology and digital transformation.
For businesses entering either market, these emerging areas could become an increasingly important part of cross-border cooperation.
IFZA and AHK Look to Turn Business Connections Into Long-Term Growth
The MoU ultimately gives IFZA and AHK a stronger framework for continuing their work together. The immediate focus is on creating opportunities for companies to connect, exchange knowledge and explore new markets, but the longer-term objective is broader: building commercial relationships that can lead to investment and sustained business activity.
For German companies, closer cooperation with IFZA can provide another connection into Dubai’s business ecosystem. For UAE companies, stronger engagement with AHK can offer access to German companies and Europe’s wider industrial and commercial network.
The signing itself is only the starting point. The more important measure will be what follows — new partnerships, market entries, investment projects and companies using these connections to expand across borders.
For Dubai’s free zone sector, that is precisely the opportunity. Stronger UAE-Germany business relations can bring another stream of international companies into the emirate while giving existing businesses more ways to reach European markets.
