DP World is strengthening its long-term presence in India as Executive Chairman Essa Kazim makes his first visit to the country in his new role.

The Dubai-headquartered logistics company used the visit to reinforce its relationship with Indian port authorities. At the same time, it opened a new phase of the Nhava Sheva Business Park. The company also discussed potential investment opportunities around major port infrastructure.

The move highlights India’s growing importance within DP World’s global logistics network. Additionally, it adds another significant link between the UAE and one of its most important trading partners.

DP World Deepens Its Long-Term Commitment to India

DP World’s latest activities in India reflect a strategy that goes well beyond operating individual port terminals. The company is building a broader logistics network designed to connect ports, warehouses, rail infrastructure and inland markets. That approach gives DP World a larger role in the movement of goods across India’s rapidly expanding trade ecosystem.

Kazim travelled to India with DP World Group CEO Yuvraj Narayan and members of the company’s Global Board of Directors.

During the visit, the group met Gaurav Dayal, Chairman of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), and Ravish Kumar, Deputy Chairman of JNPA.

The discussions focused on future opportunities, including potential cooperation around Vadhavan Port. They also discussed further investment in the JNPA Special Economic Zone.

DP World’s relationship with JNPA dates back almost three decades. It began with the concession agreement for the Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal.

Nhava Sheva Business Park Adds Another 1 Million Square Feet

The expansion of Nhava Sheva Business Park gives DP World’s India strategy a more visible physical footprint. Warehousing has become an increasingly important part of modern logistics. For example, companies look for ways to store goods closer to ports and major consumption centres while keeping supply chains flexible.

Kazim and Narayan inaugurated Phase 2 of Nhava Sheva Business Park, adding approximately 1 million square feet of warehousing capacity.

The second phase covers 42 acres and represents an investment of around ₹500 crore, equivalent to approximately $52 million.

The first phase occupies another 44 acres and provides a further 1 million square feet of warehouse space.

Together, the two phases now provide 2 million square feet of warehousing capacity across 86 acres.

The facility gives businesses additional space to store and manage cargo within a wider logistics ecosystem. This ecosystem is connected to one of India’s major maritime gateways.

DP World Is Connecting Ports, Warehouses and Rail

The Nhava Sheva project forms part of a larger logistics strategy in India. Instead of treating warehousing, port handling and transportation as separate services, DP World is connecting them into a single supply chain network.

That model can matter considerably for manufacturers, retailers and international businesses operating in India. Cargo arriving at a port may need to move into storage. Afterward, it may undergo customs procedures, transfer to rail or road and then continue to an inland distribution centre.

DP World has been developing an integrated network around Nhava Sheva that includes port operations, container freight stations, rail connectivity, warehousing and Free Trade Warehousing Zone capabilities.

The objective is to give customers greater control over cargo movement while reducing unnecessary handling and improving the efficiency of supply chains.

For companies dealing with large volumes of imports and exports, having several logistics functions connected through the same network can also simplify how goods move from the port to their final destination.

India Takes a Bigger Role in DP World’s Global Growth

India has become an increasingly important part of DP World’s international expansion strategy. The country’s large consumer market, manufacturing ambitions and growing trade volumes are creating demand for logistics infrastructure capable of handling increasingly complex supply chains.

Kazim described India as a strategic partner in DP World’s global growth journey. Furthermore, he pointed to opportunities created by the country’s ambition to become a major global trading hub.

The company has already committed significant capital to Indian logistics infrastructure.

DP World previously announced investments of more than $200 million across three Free Trade Warehousing Zone facilities in India. Those facilities complement the company’s port, rail and warehousing operations.

The latest Nhava Sheva investment adds another piece to that network.

UAE-India Trade Ties Add Strategic Importance

The expansion also carries significance beyond DP World’s own operations. The UAE and India have developed increasingly close commercial ties. In addition, Dubai serves as a major gateway for Indian companies looking to reach markets across the Middle East and beyond.

A UAE-headquartered logistics company expanding its infrastructure in India strengthens that connection at the supply-chain level.

DP World’s global network can link Indian cargo with markets across the Middle East, Europe, Africa and other international destinations. Therefore, it gives businesses more options for moving goods through established trade corridors.

The UAE-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) has also supported stronger bilateral trade ties. This agreement creates additional opportunities for businesses operating between the two markets.

Logistics infrastructure becomes particularly important as trade volumes grow. Faster and more connected cargo movement can support companies expanding production, entering new markets or establishing regional distribution operations.

Vadhavan Port Could Create Another Opportunity

DP World’s discussions with JNPA also point toward potential future involvement in India’s expanding port infrastructure. Vadhavan Port, one of India’s major planned port developments, could become an important part of the country’s long-term maritime capacity.

For DP World, interest in Vadhavan fits naturally with its existing presence around Mumbai and Nhava Sheva. A stronger network of port and logistics assets could give the company additional opportunities to serve growing cargo volumes.

The company also discussed potential investment in the JNPA Special Economic Zone, suggesting that its India strategy could continue moving beyond traditional port operations.

No final investment commitment was announced as part of the visit. However, the discussions indicate that DP World is continuing to evaluate opportunities across India’s logistics infrastructure.

DP World and India Are Looking at the Long Game

The latest developments point to a long-term strategy rather than a single expansion project. DP World is adding warehouse capacity while maintaining relationships with port authorities and examining opportunities around future infrastructure.

For Indian businesses, the additional logistics capacity can provide more options for storage and distribution. For international companies, it strengthens the infrastructure available for moving goods through one of Asia’s most important markets.

For the UAE, the expansion reinforces the international reach of a Dubai-based company whose operations now stretch well beyond the emirate’s own ports.

India is becoming a larger part of DP World’s global logistics map. The latest investment at Nhava Sheva shows that the company intends to keep building that position.
