Dubai-based airline flydubai is expanding its cargo business with the launch of dedicated freighter operations from Al Maktoum International Airport, giving Dubai’s trade and logistics ecosystem another boost as demand for regional freight capacity continues to grow.
Starting 1 October 2026, flydubai will add three Boeing 737-800 freighter aircraft through a wet-lease agreement with SolitAir. Each aircraft will provide around 23,000 kilograms of payload capacity per flight, allowing the airline to handle larger and more specialised shipments alongside the cargo already transported in the belly holds of its passenger aircraft.
For logistics operators, exporters, e-commerce companies and businesses based in UAE free zones, the move adds another layer of connectivity through Dubai. Dedicated freighter aircraft give operators more flexibility over cargo schedules and payloads, especially when shipments cannot easily fit within passenger aircraft operations.
Dedicated Freighter Flights Will Begin in October 2026
flydubai will begin its dedicated cargo operations with three Boeing 737-800 freighters ahead of the busy fourth-quarter trading period. The airline already carries cargo across its passenger network, but dedicated freighters give it far more control over the type, volume and timing of shipments it can accept. Main-deck cargo capacity also allows the airline to handle freight that may be too large, heavy or operationally complex for standard passenger aircraft belly holds.
The move could be only the beginning. flydubai has also indicated that it may explore converting some passenger aircraft into freighters from 2029. Its longer-term cargo capacity could expand further as additional aircraft join the wider fleet, including the Boeing 787 Dreamliners already planned for future operations.
Al Maktoum International Airport Becomes the Main Freighter Hub
The new freighter aircraft will operate from Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, putting flydubai Cargo inside one of Dubai’s most important emerging logistics clusters. The location connects air freight operations with warehouses, road transport networks, freight forwarders and nearby access to Jebel Ali Port.
That combination matters for companies moving goods through Dubai. A shipment can arrive at DWC, move into nearby warehousing or customs facilities, transfer by road and continue toward regional or international markets without passing through several disconnected logistics zones. For companies operating from Dubai South and nearby free zones, that can reduce unnecessary handling and simplify distribution planning.
flydubai Could Connect Cargo Across More Than 125 Destinations
flydubai’s wider network covers more than 125 destinations across Africa, Central Asia, the Caucasus, Europe, the GCC, the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia. The airline plans to use its new freighter fleet for both scheduled services and point-to-point charter operations, giving cargo customers more options depending on demand.
This could prove particularly useful for UAE businesses trading with secondary markets that do not always have strong direct cargo links. flydubai has built much of its passenger network around underserved destinations, and applying a similar approach to freight could make Dubai an even stronger redistribution hub for goods moving between Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
Specialised Cargo Will Be a Major Part of the Expansion
The new freighter operation is not limited to standard commercial goods. flydubai plans to handle shipments including pharmaceuticals, aerospace components, perishables, live animals, express courier packages and dangerous goods. These categories often require tighter scheduling, specialised handling or specific loading conditions that are easier to manage with dedicated cargo aircraft.
Temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals are one example. Exporters need predictable transit times and controlled handling, while aerospace parts may involve unusually shaped or time-critical shipments. Dedicated freighters give airlines more freedom to design operations around those requirements instead of fitting cargo around passenger schedules.
Dubai South Strengthens the Logistics Case
flydubai’s move also fits into the broader development of Dubai South as a logistics and e-commerce hub. The district continues to attract freight operators, warehousing companies, fulfilment providers and international traders looking for direct access to DWC, Jebel Ali Port and the UAE’s road network.
Dubai South has also developed specialised logistics infrastructure, including facilities serving e-commerce businesses, SMEs and larger logistics operators. With air cargo operations expanding nearby, companies based in the area gain more opportunities to connect warehousing, customs processing and international freight within the same broader ecosystem.
UAE Free Zone Businesses Could Gain More Shipping Flexibility
For businesses operating from UAE free zones, the biggest advantage may be additional choice. Importers and exporters often depend on limited cargo schedules, especially when serving smaller regional markets. Dedicated freighter services can provide another option when passenger flights do not offer enough capacity or when shipments require special handling.
E-commerce companies could benefit from faster regional movement of inventory, while distributors dealing with electronics, industrial parts or high-value goods may gain more reliable access to dedicated cargo space. The expansion marks a shift in how flydubai approaches cargo. Until now, freight has largely moved through the available belly space of its passenger aircraft. Dedicated freighters allow the airline to build cargo routes specifically around commercial freight demand rather than treating cargo as an additional part of passenger operations.
flydubai plans to support both scheduled freighter services and charter operations. That gives the airline the flexibility to serve regular trade lanes while also responding to one-off demand from businesses that need urgent, oversized or specialised cargo transport.
The Expansion Supports Dubai’s D33 Trade Ambitions
flydubai has linked the new freighter operations to Dubai’s wider economic goals under the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to expand the emirate’s role in global trade, logistics and international business.
The connection is fairly direct. Dubai already has major airports, ports, free zones and logistics districts operating within a relatively compact geographic area. Adding more dedicated cargo capacity strengthens the links between those assets and gives businesses another route into regional and global markets.
Dubai’s Free Zones and Cargo Network Are Becoming More Connected
Dubai’s free zone model has always depended on more than business licences and tax structures. Companies also need reliable ways to move goods in and out of the country. As DWC and Dubai South continue to expand, the relationship between free zones, airports, logistics operators and freight carriers is becoming even tighter.
flydubai’s first three freighters are modest compared with Dubai’s total cargo market, but the direction is clear. The airline is moving beyond passenger belly freight and building a dedicated cargo operation from a location designed around trade, logistics and distribution.
For free zone companies, that means another piece of infrastructure is falling into place around Dubai’s broader ambition to remain one of the region’s main gateways for commerce.
