Dubai has made one more travel task easier to handle at the airport. UAE citizens and residents can now obtain an International Driving Permit at Dubai International Airport in as little as five minutes. This gives travelers a last-minute option before heading overseas.
The General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA Dubai), in collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Emirates Automobile and Touring Club, and Amer, launched the service at the Customer Happiness Centre in Terminal 3 Arrivals. It operates 24 hours a day. Additionally, it is available to eligible travelers holding a valid UAE driving licence.
International Driving Permits Now Available at DXB
The new service brings International Driving Permit processing directly into Dubai International Airport. Previously, travelers needed to arrange it at another location before their trip. For passengers already passing through Terminal 3, that makes the permit another travel requirement that can be handled at the airport itself.
GDRFA Dubai said the initiative is part of an effort to provide government services at locations where customers actually need them. In this case, the airport is an obvious fit. Travelers planning to drive abroad can complete the permit process close to departure instead of making a separate visit beforehand.
Dubai IDP Service Takes Just Five Minutes
Speed is the feature that stands out. The International Driving Permit can be issued within five minutes, according to the Government of Dubai Media Office.
The service also runs 24/7. This makes sense for an international airport where departures and arrivals continue well outside normal government office hours. Someone traveling late at night or early in the morning can still access the service at Terminal 3.
For frequent business travelers and UAE residents making short-notice international trips, that flexibility could be particularly useful.
What Travelers Need to Get an International Driving Permit
Applicants do not need a long set of documents to use the service. Eligible travelers need their Emirates ID, a valid UAE driving licence, a passport copy and a personal photograph to complete the application.
The participating entities use connected digital systems to verify the applicant’s information and process the permit. This integration helps cut down the administrative steps that would normally make a government transaction take longer.
It also means travelers should arrive with the required documents ready. The five-minute processing time depends on having the necessary information available for verification.
Who Can Use the New DXB Service?
The International Driving Permit service at DXB is available to UAE citizens and residents who hold a valid UAE driving licence. It is aimed at people traveling internationally who may need an IDP to legally drive or rent a vehicle at their destination.
An IDP works alongside a driver’s existing licence and can make it easier for authorities and rental companies abroad to recognise the holder’s driving credentials. Requirements are not identical everywhere, though. Therefore, travelers should still check the rules of the country they are visiting before assuming an IDP is required or sufficient.
GDRFA Dubai Expands Government Services Around the Travel Journey
The launch fits into Dubai’s wider approach of bringing government transactions closer to where people actually need them. Instead of treating immigration, licensing and travel-related services as completely separate processes, government entities are increasingly connecting their systems and service locations.
Major General Khalaf Ahmed Al Ghaith, Assistant Director-General for Entry Permits and Residency, said the initiative supports Dubai’s smart travel ecosystem and reflects cooperation between government and service entities.
That cooperation is important here. GDRFA Dubai handles immigration and residency services, while the RTA oversees transport and licensing functions. Connecting those capabilities at DXB turns what could be another pre-travel errand into a quick airport transaction.
RTA Highlights Round-the-Clock Access
Ahmed Mahboob, CEO of the Licensing Agency at Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, highlighted the cooperation behind the service and its ability to give travelers easier access to licensing services.
Placing the service inside Dubai International Airport also removes one of the practical limitations of conventional service centres: opening hours. With 24-hour availability, the International Driving Permit service is aligned with the schedule of the airport. This is very different from the schedule of a traditional office.
That may sound like a small operational change, but for someone discovering shortly before a flight that an IDP is needed, it can make a significant difference.
What the Service Means for Business Travelers and UAE Residents
Dubai’s position as an international business and travel hub means a large number of residents regularly travel overseas for work, investment, conferences and leisure. Many of those trips involve rental cars or other situations where recognised driving documentation may be needed.

For travelers, the benefit is much simpler. If an International Driving Permit is needed before an overseas trip, there is now one less reason to make another stop before heading to DXB.
